While walking near the Hudson River, I spotted a man in a wheelchair with a trach in his neck. Although he couldn’t speak, his pleasant smile and curious gaze made a warm impression. To my surprise, he was feeding pistachios to the nearby squirrels. I couldn’t believe my eyes—pistachios, a favorite snack of mine and one that’s quite expensive, rather than the usual peanuts. It was clear that he took great joy in feeding these little creatures, and they eagerly came up to him in appreciation. His kindness was evident, and while I wished I could have conversed with him, I made sure to thank him for his generous act toward the squirrels. Moments like these remind me how small, quiet acts of kindness can make the world brighter.
