From Outback Adventures to Urban Wonders: How My Childhood Travels Shaped Ratnapped

by | May 11, 2025

As children, my family and I moved back and forth across Australia several times, traveling between Melbourne and Queensland. Each journey felt like an adventure — driving through the Outback, marveling at kangaroos, koalas, and wombats along the way. While Queensland always felt like home, I cherished the experiences in both states. We frequented the Laverton Market in Melbourne, a bustling place where old and new treasures mingled and languages from across Europe filled the air.

Queensland offered its own charm, with our family often heading to the beach on Sundays after church. I adored boggy boarding on the Gold Coast and will forever treasure those sunny beach days. These experiences allowed us to see the Outback and the world from unique perspectives. Stopping for fish and chips and enjoying picnics along the way are memories I will always cherish.

Ratnapped is a reflection of those adventures. Just as my family’s travels shaped who I am, I hope the book captures the essence of exploration and discovery. Set in the vibrant world of New York City, Ratnapped offers readers a glimpse of the city through the eyes of rats and pigeons. I want children from New York to see their city from a different perspective, and I want kids from other parts of America and around the world to experience the magic of New York through this unique lens.

Traveling gave us a diverse worldview and made every day an exciting new chapter. Life was never dull, and through Ratnapped, I hope to bring that adventurous spirit to young readers everywhere.
